Every year, on this date, the National Flag Day is celebrated throughout the country, a holiday established by Law no. 96 of May 20, 1998, marked by public ceremonies, military parades and religious services. Flag Day commemorates the extremely important moment of June 26 (June 14, old style) 1848, when the Provisional Revolutionary Government of Wallachia issued Decree no. 1 for the establishment of the Tricolor as the national flag, initially having. horizontally, the colors blue, yellow and red and the words "Justice and Brotherhood". In its current form, as established by Article 12 of the Constitution, "the flag of Romania is tricolor: the colors are placed vertically, in the following order, starting from the lance: blue, yellow, red". On Flag Day, the Museum of National History and Archaeology Constanța (MINAC) offers you an excursion into history, to highlight the importance of the flag as an emblem of national unity and identity.

The National Flag is one of the national symbols of Romania, along with the national anthem, the coat of arms, the seal and the National Day (December 1), and represents a strong and vivid attribute that identifies us everywhere as a people.

Its history is centuries-old. Although it was considered that the revolutionaries of 1848 would have created the tricolor after the French model, many researchers claim that it represents a much older Romanian tradition, dating back to the Middle Ages. The three colors were also found in 1821, during the uprising of Tudor Vladimirescu, in the canafuri and in the paintings on the canvas of his battle flag. For Romanians, the three colors signify the blue of the sky – freedom, but also loyalty and wisdom, the yellow of the fields – justice, wealth and fertility of the Romanian land, and the red – the blood shed by the ancestors in the battles to defend the country, but also courage, brotherhood and love of nation.

In 1834, at the request of the Romanian rulers of the two Danubian Principalities, Wallachia and Moldavia (under Ottoman suzerainty), Sultan Mahmud II accepted that the land militias and ships of these states should have their own flags. Thus, the first military flags appeared during the reign of Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica (1834-1842) and were tricolor, with horizontal stripes of red, yellow and blue.

In 1848, Wallachia was in the midst of revolutionary transformations that had engulfed the whole of Europe, and the Brotherhood Group, which included Nicolae Bălcescu, Nicolae Golescu, Gheorghe Magheru, Christian Tell and many others, launched the fight for freedom, benefiting from the support of the people. Prince Gheorghe Bibescu (1843-1848) intended to suppress the revolutionary movement with the help of the army, but the soldiers of the Romanian Infantry from the Bucharest Garrison refused to fight. Moreover, they forced Bibescu to swear allegiance to the nation on the army tricolor, and thus the revolution won without bloodshed. On June 30, 1848, Metropolitan Neofit, in his capacity as Prime Minister of the Provisional Government, ordered that the tricolor banners adorn all public buildings.

Between July 13-25, 1848, the Revolutionary Government issued Decree No. 252, which would bring about a crucial change, ordering that the three colors (dark blue, light yellow, and carmine red) be arranged vertically, thus giving shape to the national flag that we still honor today.

National Flag Day, a day dedicated to the Tricolor, is the moment when we honor the identity, unity and sovereignty of the Romanian state and when we remember the glorious historical past, the struggles and sacrifices of our ancestors, made so that we, today's generations, can enjoy peace and freedom.

Photo caption: "Revolutionary Romania" (1850), painting by Constantin Daniel Rosenthal.
