Portrait of beauty<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For the ancients, one of the most important aspects attributed to a perfect existence is beauty, an ideal that reflects absolute symmetry. Therefore, for the ancients, perfect beauty represented a mixture between the social status of the individual, his physical appearance and superior virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For women, physical perfection was represented through symmetrical features, a spotless white complexion, blond or light brown hair and natural athletic shapes. The face had to be delicate and round with symmetrical features, a narrow forehead with united eyebrows, a straight nose and light skin with naturally coloured cheeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, everyone agreed that physical beauty mirrors inner beauty and that this is a gift from the gods and therefore, it had an important place in the harmony of the physical world, being translated into mathematics through the golden section of Pythagoras and Euclid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In this month in which we celebrate women and their beauty, the Museum of National History and Archaeology of Constan\u021ba presents to the public a lesser-known artifact from its collection, namely a terracotta statuette with a female representation dated to the Hellenistic period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was discovered in Mangalia (ancient Callatis) in 1965 (MINAC no. inv. 5349) and entered the institution’s collection through a donation act. The artifact is made of moulded clay, then fired in an oven. The statuette is empty on the inside and bears a bust image of a young woman, dressed in a fine garment similar to a peplos<\/em>, which leaves her shoulders bare and highlights her chest with the help of a deep V-shaped neckline. The hair is combed with a parting in the middle, with braids twisted around the perfect face and small ears, brought to the back of the head, where it is gathered in a simple bun. On her head, the young woman wears a stephane<\/em>-type ornament, and her belly and arms are wrapped in a fabric whose draperies decorate the base of the Tanagra-type statuette.
