Eros the archer and the torments of love<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Greeks called him Eros, the Romans called him Cupido or Amor, his name meaning both in ancient Greek and Latin, passionate desire or carnal love. In both cultures, he was considered the son of the goddess of love, Venus, being known both as the messenger and executioner of his mother and absolutely unforgiving with the target imposed or even chosen. In ancient art, the god was represented either in the form of a delicate young man or of a plump and playful little child. In both cases, he can be recognized either after the golden wings that adorn his back, or after his specific weapons, the bow with enchanted arrows. It is said that nothing and no one in the world can resist to the sweet venom of love that they spread. Not even the gods are immune to Amor’s weapons, which makes him feared even by Jupiter. Legends tell that even the beautiful Venus was wounded one day by one of the arrows from his quiver, while she embrace her son and thus the goddess fell madly in love with the handsome Adonis. Moreover, sent by her mother to punish the parents who would who thought their daughter to be as beautiful as Venus, Eros accidentally pricked himself with an arrow intended for Psyche and so, instead of executing the sentence of his mother who condemns the young girl to fall in love with a monster, he fell madly in love of this girl. After many trials to which they are both subjected, including the one by which Psyche is sent by Venus to the underworld, the two lovers will obtain the blessing of Jupiter and will eventually be wed. The trials that this two are subjected, are a metaphor for the torments of love, which burns you in thousands of fires, takes you up to heaven and lowers you to hell, but for those who overcome them, the reward is worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the month in which we celebrate love, the Museum of National History and Archaeology from Constanta has the great pleasure of presenting to the public, a lesser-known artifact from its collection. It is a small fragment of a terracotta statuette (approximately 10 cm long), which was discovered in Mangalia (ancient Callatis), and was part of the Vasile Canarache collection (MINAC no. inv. 1892), having been donated by him to our museum. The Tanagra-type statuette dates back to the Hellenistic era and depicts an image of Eros rendered as a young man standing, with large wings half-open, naked and wearing a crown on his head, seen from the front. The iconographic pose leads us to think of the greatness associated with the presence of love and the fact that as the messenger of his mother, Eros shares her justice among mortals and gods alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With the story of Amor and Psyche in mind and in the eve of this commercial celebration, let us not forget the wise words of the Roman poet Publius Virgilius Maro who said, omnia vincit amor and nos cedamus amori<\/em>, in translation love conquers all, <\/em>so we too shall yield to love<\/em> (Virgilius, Bucolics<\/em>, X, 69).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Museum of National History and Archaeology Constan\u021ba wishes you all to celebrate love in every day of your life, to rejoice together with your other half and even if the torments of love burn you, to remember that those who truly love each other can overcome these torments together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But don’t forget, don’t anger Venus…otherwise, now you know what will happen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Curator: Ana Cristina Hamat<\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/minac.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/EXPONATUL-LUNII-FEBRUARIE-1-1024x1024.jpeg\")
