Fragment dintr-un capitel de marmur\u0103 descoperit la Constan\u021ba \u00een condi\u021bii necunoscute. Acesta poart\u0103 pe fa\u021ba principal\u0103 o monogram\u0103 cruciform\u0103 flancat\u0103 de dou\u0103 caneluri largi, iar \u00een col\u021buri este decorat\u0103 cu c\u00e2te o floare de crin. Monograma este \u00eenscris\u0103 \u00eentr-un cerc dublu \u0219i a fost citit\u0103 \u1f38\u03c9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5. Se presupune c\u0103 ar fi vorba despre Episcopul de Tomis, Ioan, care ar fi tr\u0103it aici \u00een prima jum\u0103tate a sec. al V-lea p. Chr. Episcopul este men\u021bionat \u00een scrierile antice ca fiind unul dintre ap\u0103r\u0103torii ortodoxiei \u00een timpul marilor controverse nestoriene \u0219i monofizite din secolul al V-lea.

Capitelul cu simboluri cre\u0219tine se presupune c\u0103 ar proveni de la un edificiu ecleziastic, poate chiar de la o biseric\u0103 \u00eenchinat\u0103 Sf\u00e2ntului Ioan, la Tomis fiind identificate, p\u00e2n\u0103 \u00een prezent, opt l\u0103ca\u0219uri de cult cre\u0219tine. Ipoteza func\u021bion\u0103rii la Tomis a unei biserici dedicate Sf\u00e2ntului Ioan este confirmat\u0103 de o stel\u0103 funerar\u0103 datat\u0103 \u00een sec. IV-V p. Chr., ridicat\u0103 pentru Maru, fiica lui Ioan (\u1f38\u03c9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5), administrator al bisericii Sf. Ioan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian testimonies from ancient Dobrogea (II) \u2013 Fragment of a marble capital discovered in Constanta in unknown conditions. It bears on the main face a cruciform monogram flanked by two broad grooves, with a lily flower in the corners. The monogram is inscribed in a double circle and it was read \u1f38\u03c9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5. It is hypothesized to be one of the Bishop of Tomis, John, who lived in the first half of the 5th century AD. Bishop John is mentioned in ancient writings as one of the defenders of Orthodoxy during the great Nestorian and Monophysite controversies of the 5th century. Ioannes is a Christian name of Semitic origin and is frequently found in inscriptions from Scythia in the 4th-6th centuries AD. The capital with Christian symbols is supposed to come from an ecclesiastical building, perhaps even from a church dedicated to St. John, in Tomis, eight Christian places of worship have been identified so far. The hypothesis of a church dedicated to St. John in Tomis is confirmed by a funerary stele dated in the 4th \u2013 5th century AD, erected for Maru, daughter of John (\u1f38\u03c9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5), administrator of the church of St. John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n St. John the Baptist is one of the most important figures in the Christian tradition, playing a crucial role in preparing people for the coming of Jesus Christ.
