De\u0219i numele celui pomenit \u00een inscrip\u021bie nu s-a p\u0103strat, s-au emis mai multe ipoteze, cea mai acceptat\u0103 fiind cea formulat\u0103 de Ion Barnea, care presupunea c\u0103 numele martirului ar fi fost Titus (numit \u00een unele texte Philus), unul dintre episcopii martiriza\u021bi ai Tomisului. Din textele antice afl\u0103m c\u0103 Titus a p\u0103timit \u00een timpul \u00eemp\u0103ratului Licinius (319-323 p. Chr.). Refuz\u00e2nd s\u0103 fac\u0103 serviciul militar, a fost supus torturilor, \u00een final fiind omor\u00e2t \u0219i corpul lui aruncat \u00een mare. Adus la \u021b\u0103rm, a fost \u00eenmorm\u00e2ntat de c\u0103tre comunitatea evlavioas\u0103 pe proprietatea lui Amandus, care s-a ocupat de toate \u00eengrijirile necesare. Valoarea inscrip\u021biei const\u0103 \u00een confirmarea epigrafic\u0103 a martirilor \u00eenregistra\u021bi \u00een Martirologii, exemple asem\u0103n\u0103toare reg\u0103sindu-se \u00een Dobrogea la Axiopolis \u0219i la Noviodunum. Dac\u0103 presupunerile speciali\u0219tilor sunt adev\u0103rate, avem confirmarea existen\u021bei la Tomis a unui episcop – Titus sau Philus – martirizat \u00een timpul persecu\u021biilor lui Licinius. El este din punct de vedere cronologic al doilea episcop de Tomis men\u021bionat de Martirologii dup\u0103 Evangelicus, cel din urm\u0103 fiind cunoscut numai din povestirea despre martirizarea lui Epictet \u0219i Astion la Halmyris \u00een timpul \u00eemp\u0103ratului Diocletian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian testimonies from ancient Dobrogea (III) \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Marble plaque dedicated to a martyr of Christ discovered in Tomis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Fragment of a marble plaque discovered in the Tomis Nord neighborhood in Constan\u021ba and procured in 1968 by the specialists of the Museum of Constan\u021ba from someone called Ion Aldea. The text of the inscription mentions the name of a martyr, who was also a bishop. The plaque seems to have been placed at the entrance to a martyrium built in Tomis sometime in the late 4th and early 5th centuries AD to house the martyr’s relics, which were initially buried in a modest tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u039c\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5[\u03c2 \u03a7\u03c1\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6]\n\n\n\n \u03c7\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3 [\u03c7\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2]\n\n\n\n \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u1fe6[\u03d1\u03b1 \u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03af]\n\n\n\n “Here rests \u2026 the martyr of Christ and bishop”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although the name in the inscription has not been preserved, several hypotheses have been put forward, among which the most accepted is that of Ion Barnea, who suggested that the martyr’s name was Titus (called Philus in some texts), one of the martyred bishops of Tomis. From the ancient texts, we know that Titus suffered under Emperor Licinius (319-323 B.C.). He refused military service and he was subjected to torture, finally killed and his body thrown into the sea. Brought ashore, he was buried by the pious community on the property of Amandus, who provided all the necessary care. The value of the inscription lies in its epigraphic confirmation of the martyrs recorded in the Martyrologies, examples of which can be found in Dobrudja at Axiopolis and Noviodunum. If the assumptions of the specialists are correct, we have the confirmation of the existence at Tomis of a bishop – Titus or Philus – martyred during the persecutions of Licinius. He is chronologically the second bishop of Tomis, who is also mentioned by the Martyrologists after Evangelicus, the second being known only from the story of the martyrdom of Epictetus and Astion at Halmyris during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the occasion of the Easter Holidays, the collective of the National History and Archaeology Museum of Constanta wishes you the warmest thoughts of peace, light and hope.
