From the same context came numerous archaeological materials, mainly ceramic fragments, dated to the 2nd–3rd centuries AD, deposited after the funerary space had gone out of use.

The object has analogies with finds from Callatis – Mangalia (Constanța County) and from the extra-muros area of Troesmis fortress – Iglița (Tulcea County), all chronologically assigned to the same period.

Measuring only 4.8 cm in length, the artefact depicts a dolphin with an open snout, bearing three notches that may suggest the animal’s teeth. This detail is common in Roman art, where dolphins were sometimes portrayed as sea monsters. The upper part of the tail is missing, yet the fracture surface was later carefully smoothed.

On the dolphin’s body, two vertical, parallel incisions can be observed; these might allude to reins and, together with the dorsal fin on the animal’s head, could correspond to a well-known Roman iconographic motif — Cupid riding a dolphin.

The artefact is decorated on one side only and pierced vertically, a feature that may indicate its use as a button or decorative garment element.

In Antiquity, the dolphin was associated with major deities such as Neptune, Venus, Cupid, and Bacchus, as well as with other legendary beings — Nereids, Triton, Palaemon, and Arion, among others. In the Roman collective imagination, the dolphin was regarded as a protector of sailors and, at the same time, as a psychopomp, guiding the souls of drowned mariners to the afterlife.

This artefact illustrates both the complexity of ancient beliefs and the artistic refinement of the Roman communities along the western coast of Pontus Euxinus (the Black Sea).

Curatori / Curators:

drd.
